Manhattan Relay - 1 （マンハッタンリレー - １）

朝５時すぎ、目が覚める。天気予報を確認。
気温は30℃あたりまであがる、晴の予報。
マンハッタン島のまわりの水温も、23℃をこえている。

Just after 5:00AM, I wake up.
First, I check the weather via the Internet.
The forecast is Sunny and over 85F.
The water temp around Manhattan Island will be over 75F.

朝７時前、ホテルを出る。
空を見上げる。快晴だ！
タクシーにのり、ピア２５へ。
ダウンタウンの高層ビルにうつる朝日。美しい！

Before 7:00AM, my teammate and I leave our hotel.
Looking up into the sky, YES ! It is a beautiful blue sky.
We take a taxi to Pier 25.

本日の参加チーム、海外組（日本、オーストラリア、イスラエル）を含め、合計１８チーム。
Total 18 teams, including from Japan, Australia, and Israel, participate in the event.

チェックインをすませ、両腕にチームの番号が書かれる。
各チームのボートがピアに着くと、スイマーが乗船。
We check in to get the team number "12" on both our arms.
Swimmers ride on the team-boat.
我がチームも、ボート「TAZ」にのり、所定地へ移動。
イースト・リバーの最南の橋（ブロックリン橋）で、スタートスイマーがくるのを待つ。

Our support boat is "TAZ." Our boat moves to the Brookly Bridge to wait our lead swimmer, swimming up into the East River.

我がチームのスタートスイマー、M氏は、他のチームのスイマーと一緒に、スタート地点（Pier A) へボート移動。M氏によれば、スタート地点では、恒例のカウントダウンがスイマーによって行われたそうだ。アメリカらしい！M氏にとって、日本では体験できない貴重な経験となっただろう。

Our lead swimmer, Mr. M., with other lead swimmers moves to Pier A riding in the official boat.
According to Mr. M, at the start point, start swimmers count down "5. 4. 3. 2. 1 !" as is the event's tradition. I believe it is a good experience for Mr. M to join this "American" way.

９時４０分ごろ、スタートがされた模様。
海流に反しての一番力泳が必要する第一レグ。ひたすら、Mさんを待つ我々。
大きなフェリーをバックに、「あれだ！」とM氏の泳ぎを熟知している仲間の声。

Around 9:40AM, the event starts.
The first leg requires a very tough swim since the swimmer must move against the current.
Our teammates quietly wait Mr. M.
In the distance, we can see he passes the big ferry.

２番手は、Kちゃん。
我がボードのキャプテンいわく、「魚のようだ！ドルフィンのようだ！」と。海流にもうまくのり、時速１０キロほどで泳ぐ。タンカー通過による、大きな波。そんな事も気にせず、泳ぐ。
いやはや、速い！５人ほど、あっという間に抜きさる。さ・す・が！

The second swimmer is K-chan.
Our boat captain express her swim... "Like a fish ! Like a dolphin !"
She swims 6 mph speed with the current.
Even though a big tanker passes her and makes big waves, she swims strongly.
No doubt ! FAST !!! Indeed, she passed 5 swimmers.


そして、３番手は、O氏。
大きな、大きな、泳ぎ。ボードキャプテンは、彼を「くじらのようだ」と言う。
だが、ここで「え！」と思う事を誰もが認識する。
海流にのり、まっすぐに泳げば速いのだが、我がチームのカヤッカー、ここら辺りが未経験の様子。弓のように岸にそって進路をとる。もちろん、スイマーは彼を追う。これは、スイマーにとって、岸のゴミや突起物、魚釣りの糸に絡まったりなど、危ない。
そして、スピードの面からすれば、あっという間に、直進してきたスイマーがO氏に近づいてくる。

Next swimmer is Mr. O.
His swimming style is big. Our boat-captain says "Like a whale."
However, we realize that we have a little problem. Our kayaker has not enough experience to find the current. When other swimmers use the currents, make a straight line and swim very fast, our kayak leads us along the bank. It not only makes us slower but it is also dangerous for swimmer to hit debris or lines of fishermen.
Other team's swimmers are catching up to Mr. O.
４番手は、ついに私。初めての大きな大会。いざ！出陣！というときに、ゴーグルの汚れが気になったり、ドキドキのド緊張。正直、どうやって、O氏とバトンタッチをしたのか、記憶にない。

Next is my turn !
"Go Now !" our boat captain directs me. My tension is the biggest moment in the day.
Indeed, I do not remember how I tagged Mr. O.

少し、泳ぎだして気づく。幾つかのチームが、競いあっているのだろう。我がチーム以外のカヤック、ボードが視界に入る。自分の精一杯の力で泳ぐ！抜かされない！それだけに集中。
After a while swimming, I realize that I am swimming with other swimmers. I can see other teams' kayakers and boats.
In that time, I say to myself "I should focus on speed ! Nobody should pass me !!"

45分後、M氏が私に近づいてきた。バトンタッチ！
まずは、私の第一ステップが終わった・・。

After 45 minutes.... our first swimmer, Mr. M, is approaching me.
"Hi touch !"
My first step is finished...
