Belem, Lisbon (ベレン地区：リスボン郊外)

久しぶりに大きなベットで目覚め、カーテンを開ける。
高層ビル、高速道路、汽車、ぎっしりとつまった屋根。

After waking up in a big bed at our hotel, opening the curtains,
high rise buildings, highways, trains, and packed roofs...

13日間、雑踏からかけ離れていた我々にとり、いやはや、ここは、都会だ！
船酔いのような、ふらふら足のふたりが初日の観光に選んだ先は、
人ごみを避けるように、Belem（ベレン）。

After 13 days isolation from the human world, we honestly feel that this is the city.
So, to aovid crowds, as our first destination in Portugal, we chose the town of Belem.
まずは、＜発見のモミュメント＞から。
ポルトガル人の航海時代(1415~)の先駆者の功績をたたえる塔。
名前がわかっても、残念な事に何をしたのか全く思い出せなかった私。

First, "Padrao dos Descobrimentos"
The tower is the symbol of tribute to the Age of Discovery.
While I find some names, I did not remember what each explorer did unfortunately.

＜ジェロニモス修道院＞
Vasco de Gama のインド洋発見の旅で持ち帰ったスパイス・宝石・金などの税金(この税金の事を。ペッパーマネーとも呼ぶ）で建てられたお城。
そのスケールの大きさと豪華さに言葉なし。

"Mosteiro dos Jeronimos"
This monastery was financed by "Pepper Money" from a sales tax from Spice, Stones, and Gold, when Vasco de Gama brought from India.
I have no voice to describe this big and gorgeous palace.


＜ベレンの塔＞
外観の美しさからは、ここが砦だとは想像し難い。
内部に入ってみれば、多くの大砲が。そして、テージュ川の向こう岸が近く、最適な場所だと思う。
眼下には、おだやかな日曜日をすごす人々。

"Torre de Belem"
It is very difficult for me to recognize that this was a fort, when I look at it from outside.
Inside, there are many canons. And I realize the other side of the harbor entry is very close, so it is the best place to protect the country from attack.
Under our eyes, many people are enjoying the day.



<戦死者の記念碑>
ぶらぶらと西へ歩き続けると、眼の前にこんな光景。
戦争でなくなられた方の名前が記載されている塔の前で警備する兵士、護衛交代式。

"Monumento Dos Combatentes"
Walking toward west slowly... this scene jumps into our eyes.
The ceremony of changing the guards.

アメリカ、ポルトガル、国は変わっても、戦士された方への敬意の方法は、同じだ。
ふと思う・・・日本の場合は？

While the place differs, between America and Portugal, both countries have the same way to respect their soldier.
I wonder... how about in Japan ?

（雑談）
日本に戻ってきてから、歴史の教科書を広げたり、ガイドブックを再度読み直したり。
モダン・セーリングを終えた私にとって、15~16世紀の彼らの旅の困難さを思い、その偉業の大きさに改めて感嘆する。

After returning home, I have been checking about the Portuguese Age of Discovery.
Now.. I just finished Modern Sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.
I very much admire those who sailed over the world during 15~16th centuries.
